Hydrogen, fuel cell and electrolysis technologies are the basis for sustainable energy generation
Bringing 20 years of GDL experience in your automated series production
September 13 – 14, 2023, Messe Stuttgart - Hall 4, Booth B19 | Freudenberg has more than 20 years of unique expertise in the development and manufacture of gas diffusion layers for fuel cell and electrolyzer applications and GDL.
At the heart of every fuel cell sits a catalyst-coated membrane with functionally optimized gas diffusion layers made from carbonized nonwoven material on both sides. The gas diffusion layers ensure a uniform supply of hydrogen and atmospheric oxygen to the membrane while effectively channeling the products of the CO2-free chemical reaction – electricity, heat and water. They also act as a protective shield for the sensitive membrane and are intricately calibrated to harmonize with the functional dynamics of the bipolar plate. Multiple fuel cells are assembled to form a fuel cell stack.
Our experts look forward to discussing clean energy solutions based on hydrogen, fuel cells or electrolysis with you.
Gas diffusion layer (GDL) – a key component of fuel cells
Single cell of a high-performance fuel cell stack
The main advantages:
- Management of all transport functions from the CCM to the bipolar plate
- Dissipation of heat from the reaction
- Conduction of electricity via the appropriate use of highly conductive raw materials
- Compensation for mechanical tolerance
- High and resilient process reliability due to its special carbon fiber base structure
- Protection of the membrane from undue stresses during operation
- Customized variants of GDL possible (all processes in-house)
Gas diffusion layer (GDL) for PEM and AEM electrolyzers
PFAS-free material for PEM and AEM electrolyzers
The main advantages:
- Very robust against compression cycles
- Fluorine-free / PFAS free version available
- High membrane protection
- One-layer solution – no coating needed
- Beneficial for an GDE approach
- Durable and flexible
- Customized variants of GDL possible (all processes in-house)
